Finding Black Mold

Filed under: Uncategorized — author @ 6:08 am

You should be concerned about black mold especially if you have excess moisture in the house which is a great breeding ground for molds. You may know that Colorado possesses a very dry climate, but places like Boulder CO, Louisville Colorado, and even mountain areas like Conifer Colorado can still be affected by mold issues. There are a few favorite places that black mold will hide and they aren’t always the most obvious. If a customer happens to come across them, he would probably want nothing to do with the problem that is indicated. Besides being a health concern to your family, you need to find the root of these problems before customers do.

The obvious candidates for molds to hide would be your tub and your shower where there is plenty of moisture. Bathrooms that are poorly ventilated are fertile breeding grounds for mold. Even ones that have fans might not be ventilated all the time, especially ones that have the fan on a separate switch. If you program the light and the fan to come on together, you can easily prevent mold especially if you have small children living with you. You can easily have this done by an electrician.

Check around the tub surround caulking and the seams in the shower and tub area met in the enclosures are fitted to the walls. Moisture can get in cracks where the caulking is bad and allow mold to grow easily. A useful rule of thumb this to refresh your bathroom caulking every year. Not only does this improve the appearance of your bathroom but it also cuts off air circulation to the mold and inhibits the growth.

The next favorite place for black mold to flourish is the basement. Drywall in a finished basement can play host to black mold because of the moisture seeping in through the cracks in the foundation. When the mold makes its presence felt on the front of the wall, you will already have a leak and a damp smell because of bad ventilation.

There are no cheap fixes for foundation cracks but you might find that the accumulation of rainwater in the basement caused by blocked gutters is the cause of the problem. Building up the dirt around the base of the foundation on the outside can help keep water sloped away and sometimes, this will fix the problem.

Drywall affected by moisture will not dry out properly because it will mold and disintegrate so replacement is your only option. You can prevent the growth of mold and mildew in a poorly ventilated basement by using a basement dehumidifier.

Moisture leakages can also create favorable conditions for black mold to grow under the kitchen sink and around the bathroom vanity. Even attics can reveal black mold if your roof has a leak or there is caulking needs around rooftop ventilators and attic fans. Dampness and poor ventilation can create favorable breeding grounds for black mold anywhere in the residence.

Sometimes, bleach water can help you kill mold, but there are cleaning products that feature mold and mildew formulas that work quite well for clean-up. Chemicals used for swimming pools can kill algae but you have to prevent yourself from inhaling black mold by using ventilation equipment. If you have a major problem, don’t hesitate to call in an expert.
